Italy - Edmund Mach Foundation Postdoc Opportunities and Postgraduate Studentships for the ACE-SAP Research Project

The newly reorganized Environment Department at Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM) conducts research aimed at sustaining the natural environment of the alpine region of Trentino. It brings together the expertise gathered in the past by the Natural Resources Department of Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige and by the Centre of Alpine Ecology. The research carried out at the Environment Department of FEM encompasses both ecological and molecular studies. It focuses on the functional integrity and biodiversity of aquatic (mainly plankton, diatoms and salmonid fishes) and land taxa (mainly vertebrate fauna and their parasites, higher plants including annual species and forest trees) that are subject to anthropic pressure and global climate changes.

The ACE-SAP (Alpine Ecosystems in a Changing Environment: Biodiversity Sensitivity and Adaptive Potential)
Major Proposal is a collaborative project funded by the Autonomous Province of Trento involving three regional institutions (Edmund Mach Foundation, Natural History Museum of Trento, Civic Museum of Rovereto) and one external partner (University of Davis, California). It is intended to address four major aspects of biodiversity research by using the territory of an alpine region, Trentino, as an “outdoor laboratory”:

Switzerland - ETH Zurich PhD Studentship in Distributed Algorithms

The distributed computing group at the department of information technology and electrical engineering at ETH Zurich is looking for

Research Assistants / Ph.D. Students in Distributed Algorithms

The distributed computing group is a young research group. Currently we are ten members. We are interested in a variety of hot topics in the area of distributed computing, such as distributed algorithms, peer-to-peer computing, wireless ad hoc or sensor networks, multi-core systems, or social and mobile networks. In our group we try to apply and unite the approaches and techniques of algorithmic theory and systems implementation. Some members of our group focus on algorithms and analysis, some on systems design and building. All of us work together to build scalable, fault-tolerant, and efficient primitives and applications for the distributed future of computing. Please visit the group web site for more information.

Singapore - NTU PhD Scholarships in Visualization, Shape Modeling and Shared Virtual Reality in Co-Space

PhD Projects on visualization, shape modeling and shared virtual reality in Co-Space

Function-based modeling, visualization and interaction in shared virtual environments

This topic unifies several PhD projects which will contribute towards the NRF funded project entitled “Visual and Haptic Rendering in Co-Space”. The work will be carried out at the Centre for Advance Media Technologies (CAMTech) of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The goal of the project is to propose an efficient interoperable mathematical model defining geometry, visual appearance and tangible physical properties of objects in Co-Space which is a new paradigm of a shared virtual world where the real and virtual objects co-exist and virtual objects can even be touched. The object definitions must be small in size and invariant to the rendering platform used in Co-Space. The particular goals of the project include development of the fast interactive definitions by implicit and explicit functions, description of complex geometry using parametric partial differential equations, introduction of function-defined physical properties to objects in Co-Space, and development of several exemplar applications illustrating the usefulness of the proposed approach, including an ability to establish physical contact with other party in Co-Space through haptic devices. The projects will also address GPU-based rendering and general purpose computation on GPU, grid-based rendering and interactive free-form shape modeling, 3D reconstruction.

Projects on AI
Cyber-learning in cyberworlds
Cyber-learning is an important and vital part of university education. However, when more and more information is provided electronically, it often results in disorientation and exhaust of the students. The students become more and more interested in personalized education where, ideally, their personal mentors would be able to help with solving any problem. Creating and using educational cyberworlds with cyber-instructors may become an excellent teaching tool implementing personal mentoring of students at affordable cost.

Belgium - Ghent University PhD Positions in Intelligent, Distributed Environmental Assessment

IDEA: Intelligent, Distributed Environmental Assessment is a newly granted project that will run for four years to come. The project will greatly improve methodologies for measuring the quality of the local living environment and support policy action taken on the basis of an intelligent interpretation of results. The project will focus on improving spatial measurement accuracy by using cheaper sensors (e.g. for noise) suitably organised in a network, alternative measurement methodology (e.g. mobile particulate matter measurement), combined environmental agent interpretation based on the structure of the underlying source mechanisms (e.g. traffic networks) and the physics of propagation, etc. New methodologies for distributed processing of the collected data will lead to more efficient use of computer resources. Computational intelligence will be promoted to interpret the observations made by this high performance network and support decision making based on its measurement results.

To strengthen the IDEA team we are currently looking for 2 or 3 students that are interested in starting a PhD (granted by Ghent University, www.ugent.be) in this area. They will work as part of the team of approximately eight researchers involved in the realisation of IDEA and will be fully paid (PhD grant) for four years. After four years of intensive training by the team’s experts, the PhD graduate will be ready for an academic carrier or take a high ranked job in environmental protection, sensor network related business, or similar.
